GET TO KNOW SJOERD
“Telling moving stories through music, that’s what I love to do.”
Hi there.. I’m Sjoerd van der Ven, a film composer based in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Music and film has been a part of my life from an early age; I started out playing piano and drums and developed a broad musical taste along the way. After experiencing the emotional power of film music firsthand, I decided to focus fully on storytelling and studied film composition at the conservatory in Utrecht. Nothing moves me like an amazing story combined with the right music. That emotional impact is what I aim for in every project. I thrive on experimenting with sound to find the musical language that best serves your story.
Thank you for taking the time to view my work.
Sjoerd took up an apprenticeship with Ronald Schilperoort and participated in the Metropole Acadamy for Film Music. He also received a scholarship from BUMA in Motion, which allowed him to join the MSH International Summer Academy in Hamburg, Germany. There he attended private masterclasses from composer Joe Kraemer (Mission Impossible Rogue Nation, Jack Reacher), orchestrator Youki Yamamoto (The Duchess, The Vow), and Academy Award-winning sound designer Ben Burt (Star Wars, Wall-E).
